Head Cooling Shown to Improve Running Performance in the Heat

2 min read

New study demonstrates that cooling the head can enhance comfort and performance during exercise in hot conditions.

New research published in the International Journal of Exercise Science has shown that continuous head cooling during exercise can improve athletic performance in hot environments.

In the study, endurance-trained athletes completed a 5-km running time trial in temperatures of approximately 32°C while wearing either an ice-filled cooling cap or no cooling device. Athletes using the cooling cap completed the run significantly faster, with an average performance improvement of 1.2%.

Researchers found that the cooling cap substantially reduced forehead temperature and improved thermal comfort throughout exercise. Interestingly, these benefits were achieved without significant changes in core body temperature or heart rate, suggesting that cooling the head may positively influence comfort, perceived heat stress, and exercise capacity.

"These findings demonstrate that head cooling can be a practical and effective strategy for athletes training or competing in hot environments," the researchers concluded.

The study highlights the growing interest in wearable cooling technologies that help athletes maintain performance when exposed to heat stress. By targeting the highly temperature-sensitive head region, cooling caps may provide a simple and portable solution for runners, cyclists, triathletes, and other endurance athletes.

Key Findings

  • • 1.2% faster 5-km running performance in hot conditions
  • • Reduced forehead temperature by approximately 1.6°C
  • • Improved thermal comfort throughout exercise
  • • No significant changes in core temperature or heart rate
  • • Practical and lightweight cooling solution for endurance sports
